“By her who in this month (January) is born
No gem save garnets should be worn;
They will ensure her constancy,
True friendship, and fidelity.”
—Gregorian Birthstone Poems
The birthstone of January is the Garnet. Although well known for their deep blood red colour, Garnets can actually be found in many colours.
The name ‘garnet’ comes from the Latin word ‘Granatum’ meaning ‘pomegranate’ – representing the crystal’s similarity to the dark red coloured fruit.
Garnets are believed to bring peace, prosperity and good health to the honest, trustworthy and hardworking – adding harmony to their lives and aiding their fortunes. However, when worn deceitfully, they can also be known to bring very bad luck if they are not returned to their rightful owner.
